Tolkienology.

According to Wikipedia, Tolkienology is “a term used by Tolkien fans to describe the study of the works of J. R. R. Tolkien treating Middle-earth as a real world, conducting research from an ‘in-universe’ perspective”. John Ronald Reuel Tolkien himself is the world-renown author of some of the finest works in the fantasy literature genre, his works include The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion. Tolkienology is different with the Tolkien Studies done by Tolkien literature scholars, because the study in Tolkienology was mostly done by the Tolkien fans. While the ‘serious’ Tolkien Studies talk about a wide range of his works, including letters, notes, non-fictional pieces, and short stories, Tolkienology mostly talks about his more publicly known works like the ones aforementioned. Tolkienology includes Tolkien linguistics studies (or studies of languages of Middle-earth, for example Quenya and Sindarin, and also the writing systems, for example the Feanorian Letters); genealogies of Hobbit families; accuracy of Tolkien’s calendars; morality issues of the stories; and so on.
