The Definition of Art--Revision

Art is one of the constructs that man developed to support values that exist apart from what he considered necessary for his physical survival or comfort—that is, those objects or experiences that produce as aesthetic response. The term art identifies certain objects or experiences as valuable because they are capable of eliciting human responses or judgments about qualities other than those normally associated with morality or the technologically purposeful. Art is something that stimulates an individual's thoughts, emotions, beliefs, or ideas through the senses. It is also an expression of an idea and it can take many different forms and serve many different purposes. Although the application of scientific theories to derive a new scientific theory involves skill and results in the "creation" of something new, this represents science only and is not categorized as art. These qualities determine the aesthetic characteristics of an object or experience and, when recognized, cause the aesthetic reaction.
