The Definition of Art--Revision

Art is one of the constructs that man developed to support values that exist apart from what he considered necessary for his physical survival or comfort—that is, those objects or experiences that produce as aesthetic response. The term art identifies certain objects or experiences as valuable because they are capable of eliciting human responses or judgments about qualities other than those normally associated with morality or the technologically purposeful. Art is something that stimulates an individual's thoughts, emotions, beliefs, or ideas through the senses. It is also an expression of an idea and it can take many different forms and serve many different purposes. Although the application of scientific theories to derive a new scientific theory involves skill and results in the "creation" of something new, this represents science only and is not categorized as art. These qualities determine the aesthetic characteristics of an object or experience and, when recognized, cause the aesthetic reaction.

Somewhere Nowhere, BSD

If i asked by someone about my hometown, i really REALLY don’t know how to explain it. Part of it, maybe because i spend so little time in my parent’s hometown, and I think hometown is some place that I kind of ‘belong to’, so my parent’s hometown is not mine. Another part is because the hometown that I think I belong to, BSD, is kind of unfamous. Believe me.

I even get usual to describe it before they ask for more. This is one example of my conversation with my lecturer when we first met.

Lecturer : “Adiajeng Warastuti?”

Me : “Yes, sir”

Lecturer : “What school do you come from?”

Me ; “Santa Ursula, sir”

Lecturer : “oh, the one that only have female student, right?”

Me ; “No, sir. I was in Santa Ursula BSD.”

Lecturer : “BSD..”

Me : “Well, it is the one that has Ocean Park.”

Lecturer : “oh, I know Ocean Park, I ever watched it in Trans TV”

See what I mean?

Actually BSD is not just about the-wellknown-Ocean Park. Maybe you could called it more like a home complex than a city. But, like all those city, it has all the facility you need for living. It consist of houses, mallS, swimming pool, minimart, school, university, church, city’s garden, restaurant, and so much more.

But for me, the most important thing in this place is not about its facility. It is about my home, family, friends, school, childhood, memories. BSD is the place where I grow up. It save all of my memory since I was still cry for a cone of ice cream til i cry for a boy. Since my mom mad at me cause I haven’t had enough sleep (somehow back then I always have too much energy) til she mad cause I have too much sleep. Since I yelled to my brother how I hate him so til I cried to my brother begging him not to go anywhere (anyway He still go to his college in Singapore).

So whenever I go back to BSD, and see its malls, its houses, its street, its trees, I know for sure that I was seeing my ‘home’. The place that I kind of ‘belong to’.

Tolkienology.

According to Wikipedia, Tolkienology is “a term used by Tolkien fans to describe the study of the works of J. R. R. Tolkien treating Middle-earth as a real world, conducting research from an ‘in-universe’ perspective”. John Ronald Reuel Tolkien himself is the world-renown author of some of the finest works in the fantasy literature genre, his works include The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion. Tolkienology is different with the Tolkien Studies done by Tolkien literature scholars, because the study in Tolkienology was mostly done by the Tolkien fans. While the ‘serious’ Tolkien Studies talk about a wide range of his works, including letters, notes, non-fictional pieces, and short stories, Tolkienology mostly talks about his more publicly known works like the ones aforementioned. Tolkienology includes Tolkien linguistics studies (or studies of languages of Middle-earth, for example Quenya and Sindarin, and also the writing systems, for example the Feanorian Letters); genealogies of Hobbit families; accuracy of Tolkien’s calendars; morality issues of the stories; and so on. Antibiotics

Antibiotics are chemotherapeutic medicine that inhibit and stop the infections of bacteria in our body. This medicine is used to kill bacteria that cause specific diseases, such as strep throat, ear infections, urinary tract infections, and sinus infections. Antibiotics can not kill virus, so antibiotics do not work against illnesses that are caused by a virus. They do not help illnesses such as common colds, influenza, most cases of acute bronchitis, most sore throats not caused by strep, and runny noses. Antibiotics must be used well. If we take antibiotics when we do not need them, they may not work when we do need them. Each time we take antibiotics, we are more likely to have some bacteria that the medicine does not kill. Over time these bacteria change (mutate) and become harder to kill. The antibiotics that used to kill them no longer work. These bacteria are called antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Cilegon has its own exclusive area where all of the companies located. Some of them are local company such as PT.Krakatau Steel, KIEC, KBS, Bakrie Kasei, PELNI, etc. And many other are foreign, such as Sankyu, BASF, Ericsson, etc. As a result, you can find numbers of foreigner in Cilegon. Most of them are Japanese and Korean. Mostly, they work in the foreign company.
PT. Krakatau Steel is the biggest company in Cilegon. If you talk about Cilegon, usually people will recognize it as the city where Krakatau Steel located. The worker live in a residential complex, named Krakatau Steel Complex, which is specially made by the company for them. Tourism objects are also available. Anyer beach is one of the example. It’s not exactly located in Cilegon, but it’s only take about one and a half hour for you to get there and smell the sea wind blows. There are many hotels and recreational places in Anyer. Anyer is a holiday destination for people who live in Jakarta. You’ll be agree with the statement after you come there in the weekend and look it by yourself. Lots of car with B plate attached can be seen parking in the hotels’s carpark. Beside Anyer, Ujung Kulon is also a nice place to visit. You can find One Horn Rhinoceros, which is now rare and protected, in Ujung Kulon Preservation Park. But eventually, the remote location of Ujung Kulon make this place lack of visitor.
Compared to other cities in Banten, beside Tangerang, there is no doubt that Cilegon is a city with the highest economic transaction and activity. The quality and quantity of the shopping malls can’t be compared to those which is located in Bandung or Jakarta, but it’s not far down below them. Cilegon is a small town that still need a lot of improvement. And thats what Cilegon do now.

Wikinomics

Wikinomics is a new concept of business which was recently proposed by Don Tapscott and Anthony D. Williams. It shows how business in recent 21st centuries can be success by using mass collaboration concept. The difference is that instead of company works itself, mass collaboration relies on free individual agents to come together and cooperate to improve a given operation or to solve the problem from that company. Then someone who can give the best solution will accept a valuable reward. Procter & Gamble is one of the company that uses Wikinomics concept to solve their problem, especially in research and development of their products. Moreover, Goldcorp, a gold mining company in Canada, finally could find the proper location of new gold mine by using this concept. It is like the concept of Wikipedia, one of the encyclopedia in the world, which become so great and famous because it is fulfilled by mass collaboration.

fashion

One of the things that always change and develop until today is fashion. According to Oxford dictionary, fashion can be defined as "a popular style of clothes, hair, etc at a particular time". Based on that definition, we can say that fashion itself changes constantly. The changes may occur more quickly than in other human activity, or even technology. Fashion designers, as well as high-status consumers including celebrities, appear to have some role in determining the rates and the direction of fashion change. For example, a famous celebrity starts to wear new or different clothes then a fashion trend may starts. People who like or respect her may start to wear clothes of similar style. Current fashion is also influenced by the global fashion center such as Tokyo, which is famous for its Harajuku style, Paris, and New York City.

Stem Cells

According to online wikipedia, stem cells are one of the smallest functional units found in all multi-cellular organisms. Similar to other cells, they retain the ability to renew themselves through cell division. The distinction, however, is that stem cell can differentiate into a diverse range of specialized cell types that perform a specific task. There are two types of stem cell based on the source: first are the embryonic stem cells which are found in embryos and second are the adult stem cells which are found in adult tissues. Stem cells are expected to be a future medication due to their ability to mend various body systems. For example, when someone suffers an irreparable damage in his/her eyes tissues, the stem cell therapy can be used to restore it. As the stem cells are put into the damaged eye tissues, the stem cell will then differentiate and thus become another eyes’ cells that perform the same task as other eyes’ cells do.

Surrealism

Some people know surrealism as a kind of style in painting (even more people don’t know what surrealism is). In fact, this is not entirely right. According to Wikipedia (and cited from Guillaume Apollinaire’s quote), surrealism is a cultural movement that began in the mid-1920s, and is best known for the visual artworks and writings of the group members. Two vital elements that distinguish surrealism from other style in painting is its tendency to be suprising and features scene that is impossible to happen in reality. One painting that adapts this style is “The Persistence of Memory” by Salvador Dali, created in 1931.
