Television; the Family Gadget
If you choose the right channel, you can find many beneficial educational programs. National geographic or CNN, for example, is two of the leading educational TV channels that give us knowledge of the current event that happens in the international life. It keeps us updated and conscious about the things that happens around the world. Also, many of the TV channels educate children. They give children positive moral messages as well as creative ways of thinking.
However, many people in the society have totally different thought. They think that television program makes their viewers become addicted. Housewives neglect their children; children don’t pay attention in school; workers become lazy and sleepy because they watch midnight TV programs.
On the contrary, I think TV unite family member together. Some families spend their time together in front if the TV watching inspiring family programs. They can share their thought about the issue in the TV (for example, talkshow, news, documentary, etc), laugh together, talk about their problems or simply chat with the other family member. That is the clear evidence that TV tightens the bonds between family members

What is Biotechnology?
Humanity’s ability to harness biological processes accelerated with Mendelian genetics. Employing an understanding of the rules by which genetic traits were transmitted, researchers became increasingly successful in producing new hybrids, cultivars, and even, on occasion, new species. Scientists also developed methods for deliberately accelerating the rate of mutation, such as radiation and the use of chemicals. Similarly, by artificially creating stressful environments, researchers could create pressures that would favor the development and expression of a particular genetic trait.
Last century, bacteria produced antibiotics and pesticides, and were purposefully used in manufacturing processes. The first major bacterial strain improvements began after the Second World War, as researchers sought to create higher yielding penicillin-producing molds. Subsequently, hundreds of other strains of micro-organisms have been deliberately modified for commercial purposes.
Since 1970, molecular biology, molecular genetics, and other basic sciences have advanced exponentially. The structure of the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) molecule was discovered only thirty years ago. The ability to select and transfer a single gene from one organism to another is barely two decades old. Hybridoma technology, too, is another recent innovation. The first commercial products of these new techniques are relatively new. New techniques and methodological refinements continue to be developed.
Recombinant DNA, hybridomas, and other new methods offer several significant advantages over traditional methods. For example, conventional chemical-induced mutagenesis changes the genotype in random, unpredictable, and unascertainable ways. Through recombinant DNA technology, scientists can cause precise, known genetic changes. Moreover, novel genetic compositions can be established for an organism.
Collectively, these new methods are commonly called ‘biotechnology’. However, although the term is widely employed, the meaning is imprecise. A recent survey of United States government agencies showed that the Cooperative State Research Service of the Department of Agriculture, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Food and Drug Administration each defined the term differently. The definition can and will vary widely from country to country.
Citing the imprecision of the term, some commentators have suggested that the word be abandoned but the term seems too well entrenched for this to happen. Usually, whenever the term ‘biotechnology’ is used, we ordinarily mean “new wave biotechnology”, for instance innovative molecular biology, such as recombinant DNA and hybridomas.

TV and Children : Best Friend or Enemy in The Blanket
Firstly, nowadays television has become children best friend in the house while the parents busy with their job. Children could spend about 3-5 hours a day just to watch television without parent’s guidance. They do a lot of things with TV as their friends. For example, they eat in front of TV, because of some show, they forget to take a bath, take a nap, forget to study and forget to do a lot of things beside watching TV. This things show that a lot of children are addicted to television.
Addicted to television will give bad impacts to the children. Because they addicted to TV, they forget to study, in the end they show poor school performance. Because they addicted to TV, they forget to take a bath or to do other activities, they eat a lot in front of the TV, in the end they will grow as lazy children, who prefer to watch TV than do other productive activities. Because they addicted to TV, family social life ruined. Communication between parents and the children limited. Parents hard to know their children development, and the children know their TV better than their parents.
Television is not 100% bad. It also gives some educative entertainment that our children need and like. For example cartoon like Teletubbies, Spongebob, and many more. They can learn a lot about friendship, family and many more from that show. Then, it will develop their ability and knowledge about life.
The problem is not all TV’s programs are cartoon. There are still a lot of TV’s programs that are not for children consume. Such as, WWF, adult drama, reality show like Fear Factor, criminal news and many more.
As children, they hard to filter what is wrong and what is right from what they see. But, they learn really fast in their age. If they find something really interesting, they will try to do the same thing alone. Without parent’s guidance, children could do violent action just because watching television. In 2007, some kids in Indonesia died because they saw WWF and Naruto in TV and tried to do the same action in the real life with their friends. They hit one to another exactly like what they saw in TV. They didn’t know that Naruto and WWF are not real. Other TV show such as adult drama could make children have early sexual activity just because find it really interesting.

Television: Dangerous or Useful ?
Television is a kind of mass media. By its news program, it gives you much information about events that happened in this country, or even in around the world. It is an alternative mass media for people who hate: reading newspaper, listening radio, or browsing internet. However, when you watch news on television, you can hear the voice of newsreader and see (motion picture) the real event. It is much better than reading newspaper which you can merely see the photo (no motion picture) of the event and must read the news by yourself. It is also much better than listening radio which you just can hear the voice of newsreader but you can not see the event at all. Then, for those who hate waiting for download some news on internet, watching news on television is the best alternative solution.
Moreover, television can be good entertainment provider. It can entertain you by its music program, film program, quiz program, etc. It gives you entertainment easily and freely. You do not pay any cost to the television program provider. When you need entertainment to refresh your mind, watching television is a wise choice since it is easy and free.
Yet, some people believe that television is dangerous because it destroys family life and any sense of community; instead of visiting people or talking with the family, the people just watch television. In my opinion, it is just a bad effect of television that you, surely, can avoid. Just like one of the general principle in pharmacy said that whether a thing is poison or medicine is depend on the dose. You should manage the dose; you should manage the time for watching television and for other activity including for visiting people and talking with the family. Besides that, in many cases, people like to discuss, about television program that they have watched, with their family and friends. Hence, if you like to watch television and like to discuss about it in your community, so television can not destroy your family life. Television, even, can build sense of community.
In conclusion, about television is dangerous or useful is not depend of the television itself, but it is certainly depend on how we use it in our daily life. You just avoid the bad effect of it and take the advantages of it, therefore it is useful in your daily life.

Negative Impact of Television
Nowadays, television is an electronic tool that most looked for everyone. Television was not like formerly where to get television we must have money quite a lot. Now, television has reached more than 90% citizen in developing countries. Television gives variation and communicative shows so that people always try to make themself can watching television. But, unconsciously it destroys family life and interaction with communities around us.
In one day, willing somebody spends time for hours to watch television show. A survey mention that more than half children at united states have a television at their room. They spend more many times to watch television at room than learn, even willing lets to have dinner with family just for watch a soap opera. This matter of course will make their parents worry because they have no chance to communicate with their child. No wonder with television existence, a family life crashed.
Too much watch television can estrange social interaction with community around us. Various television shows that interesting make us lazy to visit neighbour or hold race between family. Some family think with watch television them get all informations and fun whom they require.
Initially television functioneds to give entertainment and knowledge to the beholders. Television present music, film, infotainment and others shows that very useful to throw away the saturation after strive all day long. But now television has changed the function to commercial centre. All shows designed so that can be sold.
We can't thoroughly impute television. Anyway, we can get assorted knowledge with watching television. We can decrease impact negative from watch television by decrease time to watch television, increase more outdoors activities or go picnic with family.

Television, a Threat of Community Sense
Television and Its Benefits - Chastity Emmanuelle / 16207065
First of all, there are a lot of television programs which provide us with educational informations and also entertainment. By watching programs such as those on TVRI, news programs available on nearly every channels, cooking shows, talkshows, or simply programs like "After School" on RCTI, people may receive extra knowledge which can be useful for their studies or jobs. People can also keep up with what is happening around the world by simply tuning in those television shows. If you are tired of everyday's routine and just want to have a break, watching television is definitely a good option to refresh yourself. Tuning on entertainment programs is definitely relaxing. Take cartoons, gossip shows, quiz shows, sitcoms, and music and lifestyle channels for examples.
Secondly, it is possible to spend some quality time with your beloved family by simply watching television together in the living room. You don't have to spend too much energy or money, yet you can still have fun with your loved ones by simply tuning on television shows. You and your family can have discussions over whatever it is you watch together on television or simply laugh out loud at the funny parts of a television show. By simply watching television, you can manage a good relationship with your family without even having to leave home.
In conclusion, i believe television is not dangerous at all as long as people are responsible enough to use it wisely, such as for educational and legal entertainment purposes and also for connecting with your family and loved ones.
Television : Dangerous or Beneficial?
Personally, I do not agree with that statement. Nowadays, television, which has become one of inseparable parts in life, has a lot of advantages.
First, some television programmes, for instance news programmes, provide us latest news and information about national and international events. Some other television programmes also tell us about reality in everyday life, for example “Reportase”, which often expose crime in society. Moreover, television programme such as science and animal life programme, could expand our knowledge and mind about scientific processes or wild animal’s life in their habitat.
Television, Friend or Foe?
Series (we called it 'sinetron' in Indonesian) shows nothing but nonsense and ridiculous thing. It's like tell the story of bad person, who really really cruel in the series, who underestimate the good person, this person often told very very nice and his/her life is full of unfortunate events. The scene also put violent, such as slap, hitting, or pulling other's hair. Those scene can be adopted by children to their friend. Even about a year ago, there is a child who did a suicide because can't afford his school fee. How he know about suicide? I believe he didn't learn 'how to do suicide' in his school. Nudity also influences children's mind. They might be dress like their idol in television, while the idol wears tank top with hot pants, for example. Something romance, like hugging, kissing, which is should be only adults who watch, children now can watch. It may be kept in their mind that they should be like that too. As a result, lot of kids in elementary school have boy/girlfriend.
Beside, television makes children--and common people--not active, lazy, decrease their desire to read, and even decrease their imagination. According to an article in Courrier International newspaper 811 edition, too many spend time watching television can decrease child's natural abililty to imagine a picture. Here are the picture.
First image is drawn by a child with less than three hours watching television a day. While the second one drawn by a child who watch television more than three hours a day. Child number 1 can draw man and woman well, but child number 2 cannot draw the difference. He maybe can draw a human, but with no variation.
Television programmes not just give bad effects, yet we can still get knowledge and information from programme like news, leisure information, food recipes, talkshow (Oprah or Kick Andy, for example), and science channel (National Geographic, Discovery Channel). But too much spend time in front of television is not a good thing to do. There are other activities that make us move, use our brain to think and solve, such as playing lego, read a novel, doing sport, playing bridge or arrange a puzzle. With the right portion of watching television--and right choice of its programmes-- we can make television in our home as a friend.
Television and Community: Friend or Foe?
When I was second grader at elementary school, I learned that television is one of tertiary needs of people (the needs that not too urgent to be fulfilled and is associated with luxury). Now, television became one of secondary needs. Nearly every house in Indonesia has one TV-set; some of them even have more than one. Almost everyone from every kind of age--even the youngest child who was just able to see--is watching them. They have no idea that television, when used to an extent, could destroy family life and sense of community, at least in my opinion.
It’s not impossible for television to destroy family life. Television is a rapidly data-giver in form of visual images. It’s too rapid that its users are unable to sort and filter those data into “acceptable”, “unacceptable”, and “dangerous”. They are forced to accept those data bluntly. And, kids are the greatest data-keeper; they could accept every data from everywhere. If “dangerous”, false beliefs were planted on those data and a kid watched it, he/she would accept those beliefs and practice it in his/her life. This could lead to destroying family life if that kid chose to defend those beliefs and fight his/her own parents.
Television also can destroy sense of community. The effort to watch television is not big at all; we just have to turn it on and watch, and it happens inside our house too. The effort to socialize, however, is not as small as that. We must go somewhere and meet persons, then attempt to converse with them. Even kids know that watching TV is simpler than socialize, and people tend to choose simpler things for them. For example, there are children in a family I know that don’t socialize very much. They seldom want to go outside to meet their relatives. When their parents ask them why, they replied that they want to catch some TV shows. If all kids these days behave like this, it’s possible that any sense of community will soon be destroyed.
Despite its bad effect, people don’t need to banish it completely. Those bad effects can be countered by good influence and filtering from parents, such as showing them what’s right and what’s wrong and keeping them company while watching TV. And also, there are good programs that could be useful for people, such as documentary and news.
In conclusion, despite the fact that it contains some good program, television has some bad effects when it comes to community, and it needs to be countered by good influence from one’s surroundings such as parents and friends. In the future, people behind TV shows should create lots more of good program, and the government should support it.

Television, Unite a Family
Nowadays, television is one of primary needs for people. Almost 80% peoples in the world use more than 6 hours of their time to watching television every day. There are so many reasons for people to watch television. Television broadcast a lot of programs to fulfill what people need, for example news, entertainment and sport programs. But, the main reason why people need television is to assemble with their family.
Watching television can gather members of a family. Many peoples use their leisure time to watching television, include peoples in a family. Each member of a family laid their activity aside for a moment to watch an interesting television program. Indirectly, watching television makes a family to come together in a place.
Television gives more than an interesting program for a family. When people and their family watch television, they not only enjoy the television program but also use that time to talk with their family. They can share each other about their activities, experiences and also their feelings. Even, a television program can inspire a family to plan a vacation together. So, Television can unite and improve the quality of a family.
Television, a Hazardous Social Inhibitor
First, on the point in which television promote sense of individualism in family and community life. Communication and relationship between family member and neighbor is vital for the continuity of life, but television addiction constricts it hardly. Each family member would rather watch their own favorite TV program on certain channel rather than to talk with each other. In other word, television has become a replacement for family interaction. It is a relaxation media indeed, but somehow for parents, TV can be a way of getting away from the kids. And the kids also may think the same, to be free from their parents awhile. But for how long will they do that? An executive director of public health states that “Americans (for comparison because I did not find the data for Indonesians) watch TV the equivalent of 56 days-nonstop- per year or almost as much as 4 hours a day.” Some may say that it could be a time when the whole family watches the same TV program in an occasion, so they can chat and share. Indeed it may, but the frequency is doubted because children and parents have a different choice of TV programs that they could watch together. The children and the parents are more likely to dominate the TV for their own. Furthermore even if in some cases the family often watch TV together, it is still creating a collective individualism. Families prefer watching TV to socializing with their neighbors. Spare time can be a useful time to interact with each other in the community to share and obtain between each other. But the fact, according to the article- Warning: too much TV is Hazardous - in the April 2001 edition of Running and FitNews- “Americans spend 40% of leisure time watching TV.” It is clear that TV has taken over most of the family and community life and form a nonconformist spirit amongst the people.
Secondly, television is also hinder social skill growth, especially in children and adolescents. At their age, it should be the time for them to socialize with their peers and other people. However, as long as the TV exists in their home, children prefer watching TV to meeting people in their neighborhood. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), kids in the United States watch about 4 hours of TV a day, or equivalent to as much as 62 days a year. The children as a result will grow up being less able to be alone and will not learn about social interaction with real people in the real world. They will also loose their sense of solidarity and their ability communicates friendly and politely. This will result to an egoistic and ignorant young generation that if it is not fixed in time, the characteristic will be perpetuated as the generation change, thus creating a cycle of individualistic generation. Some could say that a good communication guideline may exist in TV. But in the television, not all of the contents are good, and in fact there are many violence and brutality in it. Furthermore, even if there are good examples of communicating in television, according to Neil Sutherland in his book Growing Up, “TV, by its very nature offers brief and intense forms of communication which is perhaps the exact opposite of what ideal family interaction should be.” In other words, real and tangible communication in the family and neighborhood is important for the children’s social growth. Yoyok Arseno, the manager of Gapura Seni who held a special art exhibition due to the extreme effect of television to Indonesian children stated boldly that “the children nowadays are growing as an individualist human because of the television.” So, aside of creating individualism, television also hampers the children social development.
From the facts and argumentation above, it is clear that television is a machine of great social destruction towards this global society. It is proven by the point in which firstly it produces an individualistic soul and secondly it impedes social ability growth, chiefly to the children.
